Just before the winter holidays, our friends over at BIME launched version 7 of their analytics platform. BIME helps businesses discover and visualize the data and KPIs that matter most, and became the newest member of the Zendesk family back in October of 2015.
For customers of BIME, this new version means more connectors to bring data together, more tools to analyze and manipulate data, and more visualizations to showcase your analysis. We recently sat down with their CTO and co-founder Nicolas Raspal to get an inside look into the new product features.
BIME launches a new version every year. What is version 7 all about?
Like most development teams, every year, we build towards a North Star. For example, last year, we rebuilt the foundation of our product so it runs on the most modern, scalable technological stack. This year was about building and iterating faster for our customers and their more diverse and sophisticated analysis needs. We needed to better tailor BIME to their job—whether that be online marketing, customer support, sales operations, or product management.
What’s an example of how a customer can use some of BIME’s latest features?
A common “job” we see is online marketing. Many of our customers responsible for online marketing—for their company or a client—will use BIME to track analytics throughout the funnel: Where is site traffic coming from? What ads are users clicking on? Are they buying from our website? How much are they spending? BIME makes it easy to blend data from multiple data sources, like Google AdWords and Google Analytics, so you can report on all your KPIs in one dashboard.
There are lots of BI tools out there. What sets BIME apart?
We try really hard to make the product simple, beautiful, and fun. Someone who doesn’t have advanced analytical or technical skills can use BIME to build great-looking reports and dashboards. Just click the data source you want to connect and start building your report. However, for let’s say the data engineer whose company has a data warehouse in AWS RedShift or Google BigQuery, they can use BIME as the front-end of their data store. BIME works with whatever your skills and data needs are.
It’s an unfair question, but if you had to pick just one, what’s your favorite feature in this latest release?
It would be easy for me to pick one of the new visualization styles or calculation functions, but I have to go with a feature that works behind the scenes: our conditional alerts feature. It allows you to set rules and conditions on when you want to be notified about a change in a KPI. For example, perhaps you want to receive an email alert when your store inventory drops below a certain number, or when customer wait time peaks above a defined threshold. It’s my favorite feature because it underscores that data analysis is more than analysis and presentation; it’s also about getting others on board and doing something with your data.
We love the creatures helping to promote this latest release. Do they stand for something?
When we look at how customers use our product, it typically follows a four-step workflow:
- Connect the data you care about,
- Focus on the numbers that matter,
- Present it beautifully, and
- Inspire through sharing and collaboration.
Each step is signified by one of these giants. As for the visual design, we took a bit of inspiration from the film, The Iron Giant. One of the movie’s main themes is about how we often fear what we don’t understand. Data is certainly no stranger to that. We often fear data because of its complexity and difficulty, but once you’re able to sift through that, it can certainly be a beautiful and powerful thing. In a way, that’s what BIME is here for.
