Taking the Impersonal out of Gift Cards

In fact, they’re such a commodity that you can get gift cards from, say, iTunes, Chili’s and Barnes and Noble (among many, many others) at your local supermarket. This year, retailers are raising the gift card bar with features such as recorded messages, gingerbread scents, and personal photos. The new features are being implemented at least in part in an attempt to renew interest in gift cards. While they are big sellers, they are not always the most welcome gift. In a Consumer Reports survey, while 62 percent of people surveyed said they planned to buy gift cards, only 13 percent said the cards were high on their wish lists. Guess it’s better to give (gift cards) than receive them.
